Damiano Biella’s design for the Commedia dell’Arte – Couture Edition is in a wholly contemporary vein. He found the inspiration for Donna Martina’s new outfit in a fabric that featured in the Escada spring collection of 2008. Like the rest of the collection, the design here is dominated by large floral patterns in intense colours and fashionable combinations – brilliant petrol blue and violet paired with olive green, a delicate pale green, and soft brown tones. The opulent design of the skirt contrasts with the unobtrusive two-tone mantilla and monochrome blouse.

The porcelain painters were able to use a sample of the Escada fabric as a model for the design. New pigments were developed in the manufactory in accordance with the colour code, and the pattern was reduced to the format of the figurine.

In Bustelli’s Commedia dell’Arte, Donna Martina is the wife of the know-all Dottore. Instead of devoted submissiveness, her attitude and facial expression towards him show she is unimpressed by the self-important twaddle he talks. Being a lady of quality, she elegantly gathers up her full-length skirt and bustles about her business. Given the Escada credo, it is easy to see why Damiano Biella chose this figure in particular for his contribution to the Commedia dell’Arte – Couture Edition. Escada produce fashions for prosperous, self-assertive women, which is just what this Donna Martina represents.

Individual figures are only available with Limit No. 16 – 25. It is not possible to order specific numbers. The figures will be supplied with a certificate in a gift box specially designed for the collection.
