Albert Bäuml

Lessee 1888-1929

Albert Bäuml took over the company in 1888 and led it to success with his programme of "building on old traditions and renewing them in a modern style". He shifted the focus back to the neglected division of artistic porcelains. On the one hand, the 18th century designs were reconstructed in a difficult and complex process and, on the other, he worked with contemporary artists and commissioned new works in the style of the times. Such names as Hermann Gradl, Max Rossbach, Adelbert Niemeyer, Hans Behrens, Theodor Kärner and Josef Wackerle are characteristic of his programme of artistic renewal. These developments were only possible with major investments in all technical areas, for instance, in the construction of an underglaze painting shop and the employment of many specialists at Nymphenburg. The shop in the city centre was opened on the Odeonsplatz in 1909. Emanuel von Seidl was commissioned with the interior design.
