Friedrich von Gärtner
Artistic director 1822 - 1847, inspector until 1829
At the beginning of 1822, King Max I Joseph made Friedrich Gärtner responsible for the artistic direction at Nymphenburg Porzellan Manufaktur. This appointment had far-reaching consequences for Nymphenburg. Gärtner was given full responsibility for the artistic design of its production and consequently headed the moulding shop, paint shop and decorating shop and created new models for vases, cups, jugs, sugar containers and other items. He himself researched motifs for paintings and designed ornaments and patterns. With his work, a clear and strict classicism entered the creative output at Nymphenburg. Gärtner commenced his work with a great success by producing the tribute vase for the 66th birthday of King Max. I. Joseph. He continued as he began with more grand vases and services. His most famous designs include the grand vase with the picture of Queen Therese (1831), the vase with the picture of King Ludwig I (1831), the vase with a view of Munich (1840) and the onyx service (commissioned in 1833).
