King Ludwig III of Bavaria

Born in Munich on 7 January 1845.

Died in Sávár in Hungary on 18 October 1921.

King Ludwig III. was the last king of Bavaria. As the eldest son, he succeeded to the throne on the death of his father – although his true passion was agriculture. In spite of that, he earned the respect and affection of the Bavarian people as a conservative-catholic king who remained close to his subjects. Bavaria had belonged to the German Empire since 1871 and was consequently forced to participate in World War I. With the proclamation of the Free State of Bavaria on 7 November 1918, Ludwig was removed as king. The monarchy was abolished and the king banished. Ludwig III. died in Austrian exile at Schloss Nádasdy in Hungary in 1921.

The porcelain manufactory had been leased during the tenure of Ludwig III. In 1919, the Bäuml brothers established a partnership called the "Staatliche Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg" and the company was run as such until 1975.
