Majolica
Nymphenburg majolica is unique in the world. Nymphenburg has been producing majolica figures and tiles by hand using traditional methods for around 160 years. The majolica is manufactured using a secret formula which employs different clays to which porcelain is added. The majolica figures are assembled from several individual components that are manufactured using original models and working moulds – some of which date back to the 19th century.
To produce majolica, the terracotta is coated in a white tin-glaze after the first firing and painted with brilliant colours. The subsequent firing fuses the colours and glaze, the reddish underground appears delicately through the painting. Thanks to the development of special colours and glazes, Nymphenburg is able to prevent crazing in the majolica's finish. It is thus able to guarantee that it is durable, frost-resistant and weatherproof. The unusual size and brilliant colours are characteristic of Nymphenburg majolica which internationally seeks its equal.
