Turning shop

All round parts – plates, bowls, vases – are made by hand on potter's wheels and, not as in other companies, on roller machines. This time-consuming manual method of production allows the finer porcelain for which Nymphenburg is known to be formed even if the manual process does take considerably longer. First, a "lump", the quantity of paste required for the process, is cut by hand from the bulk paste. The potters then commence shaping the material on water-powered wheels – and filigree plates and dishes, which are subsequently given their final shape in plaster moulds, materialise from under their hands. Nymphenburg's repertoire includes around 20,000 different classical and contemporary shapes. All pieces are stamped with the Nymphenburg mark and the potter's initials.
