Shapely commodities of Konstantin Grcic
has designed a series of plain desk items which could only be realised with the skills that Nymphenburg's porcelain masters are able to draw on. His letter opener made from wafer thin porcelain, a waste paper basket with large round holes and a pen dish that incorporates a painted rule along with the two paperweights for incoming and outgoing mail approach the limits of what it is possible to realise with porcelain as a material. Konstantin Grcic sees the attraction of the products particularly in the perceived imperfections of production. The basket, entirely in the tradition of Nymphenburg porcelain baskets, collapses into itself slightly during the firing and loses its perfect geometric shape, the hand-painted centimetre rule on the pen dish will always be slightly out of scale – a humorous comment on the pragmatism usually associated with a tidy desk.
