    Design Franz Anton Bustelli, 1756
    Height 11 cm

In 18th century Europe, chinoiserie developed from a fashionable international phenomenon into a tide of intellectual history. The exotic world of the faraway Orient, which influenced art and taste, provided a plethora of ideas for ways to use porcelain. And so it came about that master sculptor Franz Anton Bustelli designed flame snuffers in the shape of sitting Tatars. Far removed from its function as a candle snuffer, this twelve centimetre tall, cross-legged, enthroned Chinese woman serves as a wonderful decoration for the table.
