Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg's repertoire comprises approximately 700 animal figures, two dozen of which are elephants. Many of them were designed by Thuringian born sculptor August Göhring, including this majestic, 23 centimetre high elephant. Since 2002, it has also been produced in biscuit porcelain in the master workshops. The unglazed body emphasises the wealth of detail of the expressive figure, and the matt white surface demonstrates the sculptural qualities to maximum effect.
