Mare Nostrum

Modern interpretation of the Mediterranean subject

MARE NOSTRUM is one of the liveliest examples of the renaissance of a historic service through a new decoration. The rococo shape of the CUMBERLAND service – already designed around 1760 – was reissued as a fish service around 1928. Painted in brilliant shades of red with naturalistic depictions of sea animals and shells and supplemented by a perfectly formed lobster as the handle for the tureen lid, the shape and decoration present both a fresh and modern interpretation of the Mediterranean subject.
