A porcelain figure such as this impeccable Chinese Man Greeting is beautiful. Yet it can be a real headache for a modeller. For the elegant mass of kaolin, quartz and feldspar has a so-called memory effect. Which means that unwanted buckles or depressions in the unfired mass – if you try to remove them during the moulding process – become visible again after firing. Given this, the folds on the sleeves and skirt hem of the Chinese Man Greeting, which are cut out with a knife, present a particular challenge. Modellers must use the specially made miniature knife so carefully that they do not indent the folds.
