Admittedly, this lady does not really look Chinese. Instead of a pagoda hat, she is wearing a Biedermeier bonnet and her features are so fine that we could think a grande dame of court society served as Franz Anton Bustelli’s inspiration for this Gardener. Yet the meaning and purpose of the Chinoiserie figures was not to provide a realistic picture of exotic people. Rather, these statuettes were designed to reflect carefree lightheartedness and the mystcical sensuousness of the exotic. And that was fully in keeping with the Rococo era.
