When the first artistic pioneers of the 18th century began collecting butterflies, the aim was to compile as colourful a range of different varieties as possible. Inspired by the unique magnificence of nature, butterflies adorn the most complex flower decoration in the world still used on porcelain today – Cumberland, the first service of the prince-elect’s court from the Nymphenburg porcelain makers. Variations on these well-known butterflies can, of course, also be found on contemporary designs and artefacts. For example, on this life-size skull in glazed ivory.
