Franz Anton Bustelli’s putti are characterised by zest, lightness and humour. For example, in this design of 1755-7 he designed Bacchus, an allegory of autumn, riding on a wine barrel with raised goblet and a little bottle under his arm. The plump grapes in the lap of the childlike god of wine promise a good vintage. Artistically too, they are a real treat, for every single grape is hand-formed in the master workshops at the manufactory and only then added to the ensemble.
