In the Latin poet Ovid’s work, the gods were not nearly as vivacious as portrayed by Franz Anton Bustelli in his putti. With raised goblet and sitting on a barrel, the childlike Bacchus highlights the desire and burden of drinking excessive amounts of wine, in Bustelli’s version. Particular attention must be paid to the cascade of grapes in the boy’s lap, for every single one of these plump grapes is freely formed by the hand of a craftsman at the manufactory and then added to the whole. The classic Bavarian diamond shield decorates the base of the figure.
