    Detail Ivory, glazed
    Design Franz Anton Bustelli, 1755/57
    Height 11 cm

Franz Anton Bustelli’s outstanding skills in sculptural enervation are most clearly evident in his unpainted figurines. With a sheaf of wheat on her arm, this 11-centimetre-tall Ceres greets beholders as an allegory of summer. The putto is part of a Seasons cycle the figurine-maker on appointment to the Elector designed for the manufactory around 1755-7. Portrayed as a lively children’s dance, today the figures are enthroned either on a porcelain base or a rocaille slab.
