In the 18th century, specialised table arrangers were typically hired to arrange vases, lamps and figurines. The task of these stylists, as we would probably call them today, was to guide the conversation. An arranger required a great deal of knowledge, and the commenting guests education and esprit, when Apollo or Hermes were at the centre of the table.
