The 18th-century centrepieces still play a role even in our age, which has long since lost its connection to the ancient gods. For example, instead of numbering tables at larger receptions you can name them according to their mythological centrepiece and thus guide guests to their seats. Precisely the messenger of the gods, Hermes, whom Franz Anton Bustelli designed sitting on a tree trunk, could, thanks to his negotiating skills, become patron of successful alliances and contracts.
