Model shop
The model shop lies at the heart of Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. This is where the plaster moulds for casting and drying all porcelain parts that are not round are made. The production of these moulds requires many years of experience and high levels of technical skill. Due to the fact that Nymphenburg designs cannot be removed from the mould in a single piece because of their size and complexity, decisions have to be made on a case by case basis about how many single parts a model needs to be divided into. A single plaster mould is created for each element. These single moulds may be used up to 15 times. The moulds themselves are cast from original models and then carefully reworked by hand. While the lower sections of the plaster mould are made from a single piece, the top sections must be divided into several wedges which are removed one after the other once the porcelain components have been cast. It is only in this way that the porcelain may be taken from the mould without causing any damage to it.
