The Nymphenburg animal modellers of the early 20th century – including among others Theodor Kärner, August Göhring and Hans Behrens – did not limit their designs to the familiar flora of home. Studies of living animals, for example, at zoological gardens, but also copies of pictures and paintings were used to create tigers, leopards and elephants. The naturalistic depictions of such predators appear sublime and playful. Luise Terletzki-Scherf continued this tradition from the middle of the 20th century with her sometimes caricaturising but always fun portrayal of animals.
