Max Dellefant

Max Dellefant

The Munich-based architect, painter and teacher Max Dellefant (1907–1983) studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich, where his professors included German Bestelmeyer and Robert Vorhoelzer. After working as an architect and teaching in Augsburg, he returned to Munich and taught freehand drawing, lettering, design and perspective at the Meisterschule für Bauhandwerker from 1948 to 1969. Dellefant had a particular talent for bringing together architecture, drawing and the applied arts. His sgraffiti can still be discovered on façades throughout Munich, their distinctive yet playful visual language remaining remarkably fresh. In 1940, he designed the “Aquarium” wall fountain in glazed majolica for Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg: aquatic creatures move among winding plants across a multi-part relief, while the delicate glaze allows the red tone of the terracotta beneath to show through. The design still feels strikingly contemporary today, adding a distinctive accent to both façades and gardens. We would be happy to advise you on the possibilities for an individual installation.
