Description
Photographer Nick Knight has repeatedly portrayed international supermodel Kate Moss. As one of the most photographed women in the world, and a subject Knight has worked with for many years, Moss has become a recurring presence in his work. In collaboration with Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, the internationally renowned photographer translated a portrait of the British model into three dimensions in biscuit porcelain for the first time.
Created in Nymphenburg’s master workshops in 2014, the figurine evokes Christian iconography. Details such as the delicate crown of thorns and the voluminous loincloth introduce sacred references, while expansive, angel-like wings heighten its transcendent presence. The limited art edition thus draws on Nymphenburg’s tradition of sacred imagery, while the composition Kate Moss remains an autonomous work, independent of any fixed interpretation. Knight presents Moss in pristine, iconic beauty, conveying a sense of classical, timeless elegance.
The precision of her likeness is brought to life through the extraordinary detail of the delicate white biscuit porcelain. The result is an almost photorealistic effect, allowing Knight to continue his distinctive visual language in a medium new to him. Translating his two-dimensional imagery into three-dimensional form, he creates what might be described as a “photographic sculpture”.
Transforming the original image into three dimensions without sacrificing the precision of Knight’s photographic language presented a particular challenge for Nymphenburg’s experts. Due to the figure’s expansive wingspan, the highly complex firing process had to be specially adapted. A custom support resembling a bed of heat-resistant fibre was developed for the body of the sculpture. This exceptional process required collaboration with specialists in aerospace engineering, where lightweight materials capable of withstanding extreme temperatures are used.
