Pae White

Pae White, born in Pasadena in 1963, draws inspiration from a wide range of sources in art history and popular culture. In her work, the boundaries between fine art and design become blurred, often combining personal experiences with elements from different cultural contexts. Through sculpture and large-scale installations, White transforms familiar forms and materials, opening up new perspectives on how they are perceived. Her large-scale works include Flying Carpet, her largest sculpture to date, created for Berlin Brandenburg Airport and unveiled to the public when the airport opened in 2020.

For Skulptur Projekte Münster 2007, Pae White collaborated with Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg to create My-Fi (My-Fidelity), an installation comprising three large, unique bells made of majolica. The works reference the bronze bells along California’s historic Camino Real, linking White’s Californian background with the landscape and culture of Westphalia. Made in Nymphenburg’s master workshops, the bells were deliberately pressed and deformed by the artist while the clay was still wet, making them appear as though they had been tightly embraced. These interventions alter not only their form but also their sound. Installed in Münster’s Botanical Garden, the three majolica bells become individual sculptural objects.
