Water Games

EVERYTHING FLOWS

The light is changing. The sun slips behind the majestic pines a little earlier each evening. But summer is far from over: at the bagni, parasols and sun loungers are still lined up neatly every morning, on the harbour wall children compete for the most daring leap into the water, and for anyone who isn’t on holiday, swimsuit and bikini are kept close at hand in the briefcase, ready for an evening escape to a velvety-dark lake. And yes, even an unexpected summer shower feels as refreshing as a tropical rain shower. This weekend, we say: let it flow!

AT THE SOURCE
A fountain splashes in the courtyard. In the basin beneath the rose bush, tits and blackbirds exuberantly splash one another on bath day. In the lakes, dogs paddle like valiant little steamers, while in some places intrepid commuters pack their suit and shoes into a bag and swim to work in the morning. Water is the element that makes summer what it is. For many, a holiday by the sea or a lake is essential; the Greeks even measure a good summer by the number of times they have been swimming. Anyone who has ever drunk, thirsty, from a clear mountain stream while hiking knows what gratitude tastes like. Water is joy, refreshment and a necessity of life all at once. Or, as the lyric poet Pindar put it: water is the noblest of elements. Few things embody simplicity and preciousness better than the carafe from Ruth Gurvich’s Lightscape collection. Cool to the touch, extraordinary in its folded form, with a perfect stream of water flowing from its pointed spout.

FROM THE DEPTHS
They come from depths of up to 1,500 metres, are extraordinary builders and composers of colour, and can live for more than 4,000 years. Corals communicate through chemical signals, trade in protection and mucus – known as coral mucus – and belong to the class Anthozoa, literally “flower animals”. In antiquity, coral was worn as protection against misfortune, as it was believed to be formed from the petrified drops of blood of the fearsome Medusa. Designer Ted Muehling takes a different approach with his collection: rather than removing these creatures from the sea, he recreates the structures and growth patterns of coral in porcelain. Delicate openwork, deliberately irregular plate rims and a mysterious allure distinguish these pieces. A sip of yuzu kombucha from the “Coral” cup – almost as refreshing as a dip in the waves. A bite of potato with cream cheese and honey from the spoon – nearly as exhilarating as walking across the tidal flats.

Ovales weißes Waschbecken mit handgemaltem Koi-Fisch in Orangetönen und verchromtem Ablaufventil.

WITH THE CURRENT
As if choreographed by Pina Bausch, shoals of fish seem to move through the water. A performance that never expects applause. When threatened, sardines form dense spheres, herring create rotating spirals, tuna hunting crustaceans move through the water in wedge formations, while other fish gather in amorphous clouds. Our “Dancing Fish” dances purely for pleasure. With its delicate veil-like tail, it brings to mind Richard Strauss’s opera Salome or Loïe Fuller’s Serpentine Dance. But it is open-minded and just as happy to listen to some atonal morning whistling in the bathroom. Each washbasin is unique and made to order, so you can choose between koi red, marlin blue or cutlassfish black.
