Table decoration as table talk
The British designer Barnaby Barford is known for provocative and ironic designs, which he already realised during his design studies in Faenza and London with a preference for ceramics or porcelain. For Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, Barford designed the Global Service, a series of 14 plates which, when put together, form a map of the world. They take up the original idea of table decoration as Conversational Pieces: as porcelain objects through which guests who are unfamiliar with each other can enter into conversation. For the view "from above" of Barford's Global Service allows us to abstract from the distance of individual continents and markers of political borders and instead look at the "big picture". The signed artist's edition is limited to 25 sets of each color.
